1.When and how did you contact with music and with the drum and bass style?
Dj Hidden - All my life, I’ve been interested in music. When I noticed you could make entire compositions with just samplers and computers, I became curious and wanted to do this myself. I did my first experiments on Amiga computers and gradually learned how to write music. In the meantime, I also learned how to play the guitar. In 1996, Eye-D and myself released our first record – which was a hardcore release. A few years later though, hardcore started to sound very ”happy” and drum and bass (which was still called ”jungle” at the time) was getting darker. So we focused on that instead. Nowadays, I write both dark hardcore, dark drum n bass and combinations of both genres.
2.Which was the period in your life when you felt the you made something very decisive?
Dj Hidden - In my musical career, things such as my first release and my first album definitely impressed me. They made me realize that what I once considered a hobby is now definitely something more. I view every release as an accomplishment though and I am proud of what I do. If I had to pick specific tracks or projects, I would have to say that I am still very happy with tracks such as ”Times Like These” as I think they might have left an imprint and possibly have influenced others.
3.Last year The Words below album came out. How much work was done in such a great album?
Dj Hidden - I started working on the tracks for The Words Below right after the release of my first album, The Later After. So I spent two years writing tracks for this release. Of course, I didn’t just work on this project. Instead, I wrote a lot of tracks for 12” using both my DJ Hidden and The Outside Agency alias. I have no idea how many hours I spent working on The Words Below though – but probably a lot!
4.Many people wonder how long have you known with Eye-d? What makes such a good consistency?
Dj Hidden - I was introduced to Eye-D 17 years ago by mutual friends who thought it would be nice to meet someone else who was into ”that weird electronic music”. We have been friends ever since.
Over the years, we both learned a lot about music production, the music industry and neither one of us stopped writing new tracks. As a result, we are both at the same level which I think makes us able to work very well together.
5.Is there such a good consistency at parties also? Guests are sure to come off it.
Dj Hidden - When we get booked as The Outside Agency, we almost always spin together and quite often we are also booked for tag-team sets as Eye-D and DJ Hidden. We have been doing so for the same length of time as we have been making music which I think is why we are capable of tag-teaming quite well.
6.Anyway Which one you like better, the producer works or playing at parties?
Dj Hidden - Writing music and creating artwork are both very important parts of my life and I do not think I could ever do without. That said, I do think in both genres, drum n bass and hardcore, producing and spinning are very closely connected.I think it’s also good for a producer to see what his tracks do on a dancefloor: to see if they ”work”, both from a technical perspective and simply because it feels great when they do. ;)
7.In March, you are also going to take part from the Therapy Sessions at Budapest. What is the mood of the audience should expect?
Dj Hidden - We always try to spin as diverse as possible and I hope we’ll have a room filled with open-minded people. One of the most important things for me as a DJ though is that the crowd has a good time. When they dance and cheer, I usually get the feeling that they do. So, I hope that will happen.
8.Write a few sentence about (very popular) The Outside Agency project!
Dj Hidden - The Outside Agency consists of Eye-D and myself. We’ve released a large number of tracks on various labels, including our own: Genosha Recordings and Genosha One Seven Five. It is our goal to always try to release progressive types of hardcore and drum n bass without unnecessarily having to resort to certain set conventions. Our music sounds a little different as a consequence. We basically just do what we like and hope that other people will too.
9.How do you place over the ordinary? What do you do when you're not working?
Dj Hidden - When I’m not writing music or working on artwork, I like reading books, watching movies, playing videogames... but after a while, I usually get the urge to go back to work and create something new. I also like sleeping – but sometimes I don’t get a lot of opportunities to do that.
10.In the beggining of the year What are your plans for this year and for the distant future?
Dj Hidden - Right now, we already have several records planned for Genosha One Seven Five and several other labels which we plan to release in the coming months. Furthermore, I’m currently working on a few remixes, several collaborations and of course my own solo tracks for future releases. Apart from all the harder material, I’m also trying to finish my album as Semiomime, which is my IDM alias. This album is going to be quite different from both my work as DJ Hidden and The Outside Agency. Overall, the year will again be filled with new productions and I hope everyone will enjoy them!
+1 TOP 10
I don’t really have a particular order but here are some drum n bass and hardcore tracks I like spinning right now:
